Community Iftar brings people together
26 March 2025
More than 150 people attended the 51ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø’s first ever Ramadan Community Iftar on campus on Tuesday 11 March.
Iftar is the meal taken after sunset by Muslims observing Ramadan, breaking the daily fast.
Guests of this special celebration included a mix of University staff, students and members of the local community. People of all faiths and none were welcome. The Mayor of Bracknell, Cllr Jenny Penfold, and Mayor of Wokingham, Cllr Adrian Mather were also in attendance.
The theme of the evening was Voices in Unity. Highlights included breaking fast together with a meal of traditional food, speeches by Professor Parveen Yaqoob, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University, Nick Harborne, CEO of 51ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Refugee Support Group, and others, music, sand art and a kanun recital. The evening ended with a blessing from members of the University Chaplaincy.
Molli Cleaver, Community Engagement Manager at the 51ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, said: “It was a privilege to host a Community Iftar on campus, bringing together so many of our staff, students and local community.
“Welcoming many guests to campus for the first time, this was a wonderful opportunity to reflect, celebrate difference and recognise the power of unity during Ramadan.”
The community Iftar was held in partnership with the Dialogue Society, the Fellowship Educational Society and 51ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Students' Union.
